Program Details

Selected students will intern for 10 weeks at offices within the Federal Aviation Administration, the U.S. Department of Defense, Internal Revenue Service, Department of the Treasury, U.S. Coast Guard, or other government agencies. The majority of positions will be offered in the fields of business, computer science, mathematics, statistics, and engineering, so students pursuing these majors are especially encouraged to apply. Additionally, TWC encourages students from many diverse backgrounds to apply--including women, minorities and students with disabilities.

Qualifications

Students must:

-have U.S. citizenship;
-be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program with a GPA of 2.5 or above;
-be available for a ten-week period beginning May 26, 2010 (summer term);
-demonstrate experience and/or a strong interest in working for the federal government.

Application Procedures

Students who are interested in being considered only for federal internship opportunities that provide financial assistance should apply under the Government Program option.

To do this, students must submit an online application at secure.twc.edu/twc/default.jsp. Once they create a username and password, they should log in and start an internship application. When prompted, students should select option 2 for the Government Programs. Students are encouraged to select more than one agency from among the choices listed, as similar positions may be available in multiple agencies.

Undergraduate students from universities affiliated with The Washington Center must receive approval from their liaison for their application to be considered. Let us know if you are uncertain about your institution's affiliation status or would like to find out who is currently serving as your campus liaison.

Academic Credit

When applying under the Government Program option, students will be able to identify whether or not they intend to earn academic credit for their participation if accepted. Those who do opt to receive credit and are offered a position will participate in TWC’s full program, which includes a course, portfolio and weekly Leadership Forum events. Those who do not want credit will still attend some programming events, including career workshops, field trips to federal agencies, etc.

Selection Process

Students will be considered on a rolling basis, with an anticipated summer 2010 deadline of March 1, 2010. Applications will be accepted after this date on a space-available basis. Students will be notified of their placement status as decisions are made by each agency. For many programs, students may expect to wait several months before hearing about offers.

Finances

Accepted interns receive significant financial assistance and access to furnished housing if needed. Funding and stipend amounts vary based on factors such as credit status, class standing and living arrangements. There is no application fee required if students apply under the Government Program option.

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is an independent, non-profit organization that serves hundreds of colleges and universities by providing selected students challenging opportunities to work and learn. The Washington Center is contracted by select federal agencies to provide services such as recruitment support, supplemental programming, and guaranteed, furnished housing to accepted interns as needed.

The 2010 International Research and Education in Engineering (IREE) Program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation and organized by Purdue University, is now accepting applications for the 2010 grant cycle. IREE 2010 awardees will receive a stipend (US$4,000 for graduate students and US$3,000 for undergraduate students) to conduct engineering-related research in China from May - August 2010 . Additionally, grant awardees will receive allowances for: an orientation program; travel to and housing/meals in China; plus a re-entry program. The 50 students (20 undergraduate and 30 graduate students) that receive the IREE award will spend 10-12 weeks working on frontier engineering research projects in university, industry, or government labs in China.Applicants must be currently enrolled and in good academic standing as degree-seeking undergraduate OR graduate students at a U.S. institution of higher education. They must also be able to express both a demonstrated interest in a field of engineering related research, and a desire to work in China. Finally, strong preference will be given to United States citizens or nationals, or permanent residents of the United States. In addition, women, underrepresented groups, and students from schools with limited research opportunities are particularly encouraged to apply.The IREE Program was initiated by the National Science Foundation (ENG/EEC) in 2006 to promote enhancement of global competency of 21st century engineering professionals, development of collaborations with engineering researchers abroad, and providing students with opportunities to experience the life and culture of a another country. It enables early-career researchers in the U.S. to gain international research experience and perspective.
