Program Details

Selected students will intern for 10 weeks at offices within the Federal Aviation Administration, the U.S. Department of Defense, Internal Revenue Service, Department of the Treasury, U.S. Coast Guard, or other government agencies. The majority of positions will be offered in the fields of business, computer science, mathematics, statistics, and engineering, so students pursuing these majors are especially encouraged to apply. Additionally, TWC encourages students from many diverse backgrounds to apply--including women, minorities and students with disabilities.

Qualifications

Students must:

-have U.S. citizenship;
-be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program with a GPA of 2.5 or above;
-be available for a ten-week period beginning May 26, 2010 (summer term);
-demonstrate experience and/or a strong interest in working for the federal government.

Application Procedures

Students who are interested in being considered only for federal internship opportunities that provide financial assistance should apply under the Government Program option.

To do this, students must submit an online application at secure.twc.edu/twc/default.jsp. Once they create a username and password, they should log in and start an internship application. When prompted, students should select option 2 for the Government Programs. Students are encouraged to select more than one agency from among the choices listed, as similar positions may be available in multiple agencies.

Undergraduate students from universities affiliated with The Washington Center must receive approval from their liaison for their application to be considered. Let us know if you are uncertain about your institution's affiliation status or would like to find out who is currently serving as your campus liaison.

Academic Credit

When applying under the Government Program option, students will be able to identify whether or not they intend to earn academic credit for their participation if accepted. Those who do opt to receive credit and are offered a position will participate in TWC’s full program, which includes a course, portfolio and weekly Leadership Forum events. Those who do not want credit will still attend some programming events, including career workshops, field trips to federal agencies, etc.

Selection Process

Students will be considered on a rolling basis, with an anticipated summer 2010 deadline of March 1, 2010. Applications will be accepted after this date on a space-available basis. Students will be notified of their placement status as decisions are made by each agency. For many programs, students may expect to wait several months before hearing about offers.

Finances

Accepted interns receive significant financial assistance and access to furnished housing if needed. Funding and stipend amounts vary based on factors such as credit status, class standing and living arrangements. There is no application fee required if students apply under the Government Program option.

In regards to Applying to General Dynamics Electric Boat. I recieved this email today, which may be of interest to you.

"The purpose of this e-mail is to provide some clarification in the
application process for Electric Boat based upon a conversation that I had
earlier today with a UB student.

For your on-line application, be sure to update your profile to include the
summer internship with the requisition number (08-2777) below if you wish
to be considered for a position. If you applied last fall (before this
requisition request came on line), you will need to open your profile and
add this requisition number to your application. You may include up to
five requisition numbers at any one time.

Applications are continually being reviewed and consideration for summer
internships is being accomplished as applications are received. The
closing date for this requisition is March 6, 2009. I will be attending
the Career Fair on March 3rd. In the mean time if you have any

Additionally, I was at a college recruitment meeting today. Electric Boat
is looking to hire approximately 250 Full-time Engineers during 2009 (this is in

There is a new internship posting on our web page for summer internships. I have

Job Title Engineering Summer Intern

Job Description Engineering Interns will assist engineers in checking
calculations, reviewing and preparing technical documents,
resolving shipyard problems and other engineering activities
across the Engineering, Programs, VIRGINIA, Quality and
Materials organizations. Applicants should be able to
communicate well, both orally and in writing.

Required To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
Education/Training ~Currently an enrolled college student, at least 18 years of
age, and a US citizen
~Satisfactory completion of their freshman year in a degreed
engineering discipline
~Currently have an academic standing in the upper half of their
class

Experience

Unique/Additional Must be available to work for at least eight (8) consecutive
Requirements weeks between May 10, 2009 and September 11, 2009.
