InfoTech Niagara (Buffalo, NY) January 8th or January 9th
www.infotechniagara.org/

Western New York’s leading IT Professional Association, infoTech Niagara, brings you our
fourth annual winter intersession IT Shadowing Program. We are currently in the process of
identifying local companies/IT professionals who are willing to allow students to shadow an IT
staff member throughout the day on either January 8 or 9, 2009. We have chosen the
intersession so you are able to spend the entire day to get a more complete view of a day-in
the-life without disrupting your coursework. Last year, there were 47 shadowing experiences.
The website to request a shadowing experience is ready! As of Wednesday December 3, 2008
afternoon, there were 22 opportunities listed with 9 different companies, and we are getting
more opportunities all the time, so check back occasionally to see if there is something in
which you are interested. In fact, we just spoke with a local bank who is going to list 9 more
opportunities. We expect at least 50+ to be posted by the end of December. Don’t see what
you want yet, sign up and stop come back to the site in a few days to check.

Since this program is open to all students from infoTech Niagara member schools, there are
many more students than companies; therefore, we are only allowing students to participate
in one shadow day (unless the supply outweighs the demand). Steps to participate:
Visit the Shadow Day link at http://www.infotechniagara.org/ and complete the application,
which includes submitting a resume. (First three resumes submitted to “hot” shadowing sites
are submitted to the companies for selection).
Wait to get an email from one of the infoTech Niagara (ITN) Student Committee Members
about your assigned shadow day. It is a first-come, first-served system, also based on field of
interest and company requirements. Some of the companies are involved in the selection
process, some are not.
Prepare for that day: research the company, prepare questions for the professionals you
shadow. We will provide a guide when we inform you of your assigned shadow company.
Shadow!
Send a professional thank you letter to all those at the company who let you interview and
shadow them.
Promptly complete the evaluation we send you.
Ready, set, go!

FAA DESIGN COMPETITION
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is continuing to offer a Design Competition for
Universities for the 2008 – 2009 academic year and has added a new design category.
The Competition challenges individual students or teams of students (undergraduates and
graduates) from U.S. colleges and universities, working under the mentorship of a faculty
advisor, to address challenges in four broad areas: Airport Operations and Maintenance,
Runway Safety/Runway Incursions, Environmental Interactions of Airports and the new
category, Airport Management and Planning. Students must have a faculty advisor. Cash
prizes are given to first, second and third place winners in each category. The first place
winners will present their design solutions at the American Association of Airport Executives
June 2009 Meeting in Philadelphia, Pa.

Competition guidelines and full details are available at:
http://www.faa.gov/runwaysafety/design_competition.htm

Student and faculty participants in last year’s Competition overwhelmingly found
participation in the Competition to be a valuable educational experience. Many cited the
ability to actively address real-world issues and to deal with airport operators and other
practicing professionals as meaningful aspects. Participants can engage in the Competition in
many ways – for example as part of a design class, independent study, or a student
professional society project.
